Clara and Louisa are all grown up and have gone to live with their godfather, Drosselmeyer after the death of their father. But while Louisa is trying to fix the Nutcracker doll she spills her blood on him and he comes to life. After declaring that he is a Fae prince, the women agree to help him. He must get to his cousin for help so that he can reclaim his throne and save his people from the Rat King. Clara and Louisa are along so that the prince doesn’t revert into his Nutcracker state.
This is the first book in the Wicked Darling series. Making the Clara and Louisa in the twenties, makes this a more interesting story. As well as making the Sugar Plum Fairy into a man was a brilliant twist. The dynamics between these characters are delightful. Clara’s growth in finding her own strength, while Louisa finds faith in herself make these characters come to life. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the next in the series, A Court of Hearts and Hunger.
