The Empyrean Book 1

Violet never wanted to be a dragon rider like her siblings. We quickly see just how much she is not prepared. We meet Dain is her childhood best friend. Rhiannon her new fellow cadet and friend. Jack another cadet who wants to kill Violet. Then there is Xaden, the son of a separatist. “You want a dragon? Earn one.” Is one of my favorite quotes from this book. I won’t go into the dragons, but they are amazing as well.

I had seen this book all over Instagram, but it wasn’t until I was at my local Barnes and Nobel that had me picking it up. They had a signed copy with those beautiful sprayed edges. Once I got it home curled up with it and could not put it down. The story hooks you right away as we follow Violet to the Parapet. The world is quickly laid out for us to understand. Violet is brilliant and one of my favorite characters I’ve ever read. She may get hurt easily, but she is quick both physically and mentally. The way magic is used in this world is so well thought out. This is one of the best fantasy books I’ve read and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, Iron Flame.

Product description and Images are from amazon.com:

“Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.”
