The story starts right where A Discovery of Witches left off, with Diana and Matthew landing in Elizabethan London. We get to meet some big names in history who are dear friends to Matthew. Diana searches for a teacher while Matthew is has to fall back into his roll in this time. There are unexpected encounters with past family members that bring Diana and Matthew into difficult situations.
Deborah Harkness can write you into Elizabethan Londan, as in you feel you are walking the streets with them. Diana comes into her own as she grows into her power. While the two of them also learn more about one another. Their relationship always makes me think of that together they could do anything. Because they make each other better. This book is even better than A Discovery of Witches. The world is rich and characters come right off the page. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, The Book of Life.
